As you can see, after the previous steps were followed, on day four, this was the result — the jar is PACKED full and while we could let them go further, why bother? The nutrients are best when the sprouts are fresh and young.
Notice the green leaves throughout the batch, we waited for this. If you accidentally put more than 2 tablespoons of seeds in your jar OR if you had a higher sprout rate and less bunk seeds, you may have a full jar before you really see these green leaves. The green leaves are tops, wait for them!
If you still haven’t taken the plunge and bought your sprouting supplies, what are you waiting for?! Get yourself set up for the cheapest and easiest way to keep yourself healthy and well in every way!
Fill that jar one more time, rinse the sprouts one last time, and then fill the jar with purified water again to dump both the sprouts and the water into a bowl or pot for a little straining and removal of seeds.
There are often many seeds that never sprouted and you want to get rid of these. It isn’t a huge deal, it is just not your goal to eat a bunch of seeds and in general it isn’t something you want in your intestinal tract, so getting rid of them is best. If there’s a few left in your batch, which there will be, you’ll be fine.
While you can use a strainer like I did, I’ve also found the seeds will just run off as you pour the water out if you’ve agitated the sprouts in the bowl in order to release the seeds from their entanglement. Feel free to try both methods and see what works best for you.
Your sprouts will want to dry out before moving into the fridge, where you can keep them for at least a handful of days, though some people claim theirs are good for WEEKS! I wouldn’t chance it and you don’t want to waste these precious jewels of nutrients, so I’d say eat them daily and don’t push it past four or five days. I keep mine in a glass container to keep the nasty plastics away from my beautiful babies.
I’ve also been making my own yogurt and I love a good coleslaw, so I made a yogurt and apple cider vinegar rainbow slaw with red cabbage, purple carrots, golden beets and it was delicious. Now that the sprouts are ready, I will throw some in each time I have some slaw and add a delicious expansion of the flavor profile.
The slaw of course demanded that we have some fish tacos, obviously, so instead of making my own grain free tacos, I found these Siete grain free shells at the crunchy store and saved myself some time. We used wild caught tuna, the slaw, and now we can throw some sprouts in as a layer for our delicious tacos, too!
I also juice daily or use the Ninja to make a hyper-nutrient dense, green, quasi-smoothie. It really isn’t a smoothie, in the traditional sense, as there is no thickening agent, sugars, dairy, or dairy substitute — this is meant to be a green juice but with the fiber still present. I tend to blend up half a cucumber, some cilantro or parsley, celery, and whatever other random veggies I have laying around with some purified water. Last night, I had to throw in some sprouts to check it out and I freaking LOVED it. I can’t wait to keep adding sprouts to my daily green blend.
There are a million more ways to eat sprouts, including just EATING THEM! They are pretty tasty and fun to crunch on, so feel free to just grab a handful and eat away! Whatever you do, know that you’re giving your body such a beautiful gift and it will pay off in uncountable ways.
Let the blessings be!
